How do you feel about > that emoji?
In real life, happiness is a little more complicated than unalloyed positivity.
Lots of flavors
Lots of judgements, maybe?
Let’s pull it apart!
Please take as quick or as long as seems right with the questions! You can always come back and start again. If you want a record of your answers, you can enter your email at the final screen to get your responses mailed to you. (That will sign you up to my mailing list if that’s not how you got here in the first place – it’ll be once a week, same format.) Thanks for playing!
Quiz Start
1/7
When / in what areas of life are you most likely to feel happy?
(and which of these answers are more true for other people in your life than they are for you? I don’t have a great way for you to mark that, but interesting to keep in mind)
Nature and animals (What’s your happy? I’ve run out of room, not out of ideas… there will be a text box after the next question to write any thoughts)

2/7
What emotions are most often associated with happy?
(before? alongside?)
These vary from person to person even more!
Next
3/7
What did I miss?
Which areas are unique to you that make you happy?
What emotions are weirdly correlated to happiness, for you?
(I recently noticed that feeling “like a badass” – pride, competence, courage – made me way more happy then I would have thought… stuff like that!)
Next
4/7
When I was making these lists, the areas and emotions seemed to break really naturally into 3 areas –
Animal / contentment
Social / connection
Human / growth
Do all three of these trigger happiness in you?
(I haven’t read anything that splits out these these categories, but I wouldn’t put it past my subconscious to have remembered something… If you’ve heard it before, let me know!
Oh wait – it’s the three parts of the brain! Lizard, Mammal, Human. Well, that makes sense!)

When it’s good, 100% happiness! | I judge myself hard here – not usually happy-making | Isn’t that… just… a requirement? | Somewhat dissatisfied (this default made me giggle) | I hate this and want none of it in my life. |

Which of the areas do you feel like you have the most control over?
Where do you make your own happiness happen?
Where do you make your own happiness happen?
Animal / Needs met – I make this happen, and it makes me happy!
Social / connection – I reach out, hang out, help out – and it makes me happy!
Human / growth – I’m moving forward on the path, and it makes me happy!
Next
6/7
If ALL three areas were equally valid areas of happiness –
What could you appreciate, notice, or change in order to stop ignoring potential happiness?
Next

I wouldn’t be a coach if I didn’t point out that it’s our thoughts that create the happiness, in all those different brain areas / circumstances.
(The opposite is easier to accept – you can ALWAYS think your way into unhappiness, yes? Remember the news, your stubbed toe, that thing that always makes you mad. BOOM, unhappy. Brain’s negativity bias makes it a little harder to boom, happy yourself. But it’s possible!)
AND aiming for happiness 100% of the time is silly – suffocating, hard to get things done, impossible with our brains.
